Â
This was an historic year for Lynden Pindling International Airport, one marked with many visible changes and improvements to our airport. But perhaps the most fundamental change is one that was not built, and cannot easily be measured–it is the change in how we, Bahamians, view the airport.
Â
Until recently, the airport was just a place. It was a necessary government-run facility that served a function for residents and visitors. It wasn’t a place that had any particular connection for our people, and we certainly didn’t think about it unless we were travelling or picking up friends or family. But an airport can, and should be much more than this.
Â
In recent years, airports around the world have been transformed into clean, modern facilities offering customers choices and high levels of service, safety and security. And now, it’s our turn.
Â
With a tourism-based economy, it is important to have an airport that provides a positive first and last impression of our country and one that mirrors the Bahamian landscape and the warmth of our people.
Â
This model is good for visitors, but it’s even better for communities. Airports provide jobs and economic opportunities for local people and businesses- Lynden Pindling International Airport used to be subsidized by the government, and now the government receives money from the airport. The airport will function as part of the community-a neighbour, a business, and a hub for economic activity- able to give back to the people and communities of The Bahamas.
Â
In just a few short years, our airport will be transformed into one of the most advanced facilities in the region built with the assistance of Bahamian companies, using Bahamian materials where possible and utilizing the highest environmental standards. It will be functional, modern and reflective of the people and places that make up our country.
Â
The Nassau Airport Development Company (NAD) and its Board of Directors oversees this process. Our Board is made up of individuals with experience and expertise in airports, construction, tourism, engineering, finance and community development. As a Board, we are committed to ensuring the airport is developed with integrity and in a manner that is sustainable and brings benefits to the community.
Â
On behalf of the Board, I would like to express our pride in what has been accomplished, and our excitement about what is still ahead. It is our goal to make sure that all Bahamians feel equally proud and passionate about the airport, and we will work hard to earn your confidence.
Â
The Hon. Frank Watson,
Chairman.
