NAD HOLDS LPIA EXPANSION PROJECT GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY
Nassau – July 9, 2009 – Today, the Rt. Hon. Hubert A. Ingraham, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, Sen. the Hon. Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace, Minister of Tourism & Aviation and executives and board members from the Nassau Airport Development Company held an official groundbreaking ceremony for the $409.5 million Lynden Pindling International Airport Expansion Project.
At the morning ceremony, NAD President and CEO Craig Richmond revealed the timeline for the entire project. Today’s groundbreaking marks the official start of construction on stage one—a 247,000 sq. ft. U.S. Departures Terminal and Pier.
“We are here today to herald the start of construction of the first of three linked terminals which will revitalize this airport,” said Mr. Richmond. “While this is an important moment, it is really just another step in what has been a tremendous amount of preparatory work over the past three years.”
In 2007, NAD signed a 30-year lease with the Government of The Bahamas to manage the day-to-day operations at LPIA and to oversee the entire airport redevelopment project.
To date, more than $11million has been spent on capital improvements at the airport including new and upgraded washrooms, roof repairs, a new baggage system and baggage carousel and parking lot improvements.
Last month, NAD announced that Ledcor Construction, a Canadian-Bahamian consortium, won the general contractor bid for stage one. Construction is expected to be in full swing by the end of summer. The first terminal building is scheduled for completion in early 2011.
