GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND AIRPORT WORKERS CELEBRATE SUPER STRUCTURE COMPLETION AT NEW U.S. TERMINAL
Nassau, Bahamas March 25, 2010—Today, government officials, airport staff and construction workers gathered at the Lynden Pindling International Airport Expansion Project site to witness the last steel being placed on the new U.S. Departures Terminal building.
The ceremony to mark the super structure completion comes just eight months after the Nassau Airport Development Company (NAD) and general contractor Ledcor Construction broke ground on the first phase of the $409.5 million airport redevelopment project.
“It is tradition on large scale construction sites for all associated with the project to sign the final steel before it is placed,” said NAD President & CEO Craig Richmond. “We wanted to celebrate this milestone and to thank those who have helped us get to this point.”
The Hon. Brent Symonnette, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Neko Grant, Minister of Public Works & Transport, Vernice Walkine, Director General, Ministry of Tourism & Aviation and NAD Chairman, the Hon. Frank Watson were among those in attendance at Thursday’s event.
Government officials, airport workers and many of the 300-plus construction workers on site signed the final beam of steel before it was hoisted up into the air and fastened to the structure.
To date, NAD has spent more than $78 million on stage one, with a total of 227,887 man hours and approximately 2,000 tons of structural steel put in to the project.
“We are happy to report that the project is on budget and on schedule for our Spring 2011 opening,” said Stewart Steeves, Vice President of Airport Development at NAD. “The next step is the installation of perimeter walls and the curtain wall systems. The structure will be fully enclosed by October, 2010.”
The second terminal is on target for a 2012 opening with the third in 2013. When finished, the total square feet of the new airport complex will total 571,000 square feet, with an additional one million square feet of aircraft operating surface.
