    Airport Development

On July 9, 2009, officials at the Nassau Airport Development Company held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction of Stage one of the LPIA Expansion Project.  Construction of the new  247,000 sq. ft. U.S. Departures Terminal is scheduled to be completed by early 2011. The terminal is the first of three linked terminals which will revitalize the major gateway into The Bahamas.

In June 2009, NAD awarded Ledcor Construction, a Canadian-Bahamian consortium, the general contractor bid for stage one.

The project is now in full swing. At the height of construction for stage one, more than 400 jobs will be created.

In addition to the terminal building, stage one includes approximately 1,000,000 sq. ft. of new asphalt apron and new parking facilities and roadways.   Stage two, scheduled to be completed in late 2012, includes selective demolition of the current U.S. Departures Terminal, construction of new International Arrivals terminal and International Departures terminal.

In stage three, the final stage of the LPIA Expansion Project, a new Domestic/International Departures and Domestic Arrivals Terminal will be added at LPIA.

The functional design will give a total terminal area of just over 585,000 square feet and features 10 jet-bridge capable gates. Other features include: 4 gates capable of taking Boeing 747 sized aircraft, and one capable of handling the world’s largest aircraft, the Airbus A-380.

In 2008, 3.2 million passengers traveled through LPIA. By 2020, with the new expanded facilities, our airport is expected to accommodate 5.2 million passengers.
