Around LPIA
To meet the needs of the local community and the growing demand for air travel, Nassau Airport Development Company (NAD) is overseeing a $409.5 million airport redevelopment project with the first stage completed in Spring 2011. Once all three stages are complete in 2013, the new terminal complex will be 585,000 square feet with an additional one million square feet of aircraft operating surface.
At the start of 2010, the Nassau Airport redevelopment project was at the groundbreaking stage and a modern, functional and dynamic airport was little more than shovels in the dirt and a promise.
Now, as the purpose-built contemporary structure is unfolding, the new US Departures terminal demonstrates how a large-scale project can be delivered on time and on budget. This new 247,000 square foot terminal used local workers, local partnerships and local materials wherever possible. With the transformation of the Lynden Pindling International Airport we want this state-of-the-art facility to feel like home for visitors and Bahamians alike.
The airport is often a visitor’s first and last impression of our country. We are seeking to ensure that LPIA provides an experience reflective of our warm, hospitable and friendly country – demonstrating Bahamian values, standards and culture.
We are also committed to ensuring that the people of The Bahamas will reap further benefits from our success. In addition to the local focus during the stage one construction, we awarded the contracts for the new terminal shops and restaurants, and are proud to say that all of the successful proponents are 100% Bahamian-owned companies. Plus, the 11 original art works commissioned showcase the beauty, culture and talent of our country’s people.
Looking ahead, we are excited to conclude Stage 2 in 2012 with the 226,000 square foot International Arrivals Terminal and International Departures Pier. Stage 3 will begin immediately after and involves construction of a new 112,000 square foot Domestic and International Departures Terminal and Domestic Arrivals Terminal to open in the fall of 2013.
These new terminals will provide additional opportunities for Bahamian individuals and businesses. Increased capacity for passengers and aircraft will help to facilitate growth in tourism and help to attract new airlines and services to The Bahamas.
With the success of the new US Departures Terminal and our commitment to the important LPIA developments in the coming years we are building on our promise to provide a world-class airport experience – today and tomorrow.
